Every photograph serves as visual groundwork for an intriguing narrative. Moments in time are captured on film, producing a tangible relic to live long after the instant has passed. Collections of once treasured snapshots of family members and special occasions from over 30 years ago are now filling bins in antique shops, thrift stores and flea markets- only to be purchased by complete strangers. It is this mysterious journey of the vintage photograph that constitutes the focus of my craft. I approach each picture as though I shot it myself, carefully examining the composition with the hope of unearthing contextual significance that exists beyond the visual image. Although I create according to my own personal aesthetic, there are three artists whose work I deeply admire. Gerhard Richter for his mastery in appropriating personal snapshots and popular iconography, Willem de Kooning for his slashing brushstrokes and arresting color schemes, and Francis Bacon for his fluid facial renderings and distorted imagery. In creating interpretive renderings of photographs, I hope to engage viewers in a visual experience rooted in interesting imagery, energetic brushwork and alluring color arrangements. My intention is not to reinvent the photograph but to translate it onto canvas, staying true to the picture’s composition, tone and imperfections. A miscalculated shot that causes the image to blur and the subject to be off-centered are endearing attributes to which I give considerable attention. Depicting these peculiarities is achieved through expressive brushstrokes that ultimately give to the composition an air of movement while bringing a sense of soul to the people and places featured in the photograph.
